Celebration

Kathryn dropped a small box in Chakotay’s lap.

“What’s this?”

“Happy birthday.”

“This box is too small for a table saw.”

“The best gifts come in small packages.”

“My birthday is next week.”

“I want to celebrate early this year.”

Inside the box was a vice-admiral’s rank bar. “I don’t understand. You’re already a vice-admiral.”

“Was. Past tense.”

“A promotion? That’s my gift?” If Kathryn was promoted, they’d have even less time together.

“No promotion. I won’t be wearing it again.”

“You retired?” A smile spread across his face.

“Happy birthday, darling.” She kissed him.

The celebration lasted all week.
